Chapter Four

Martin and Emilio picked her up early the next morning so that they could stop at a coffee shop and get fortified before heading to the Historical Society. They also had some interesting pictures to show her. One of the cameras that had fallen had taken a shot when it had hit the ground. A very distinct white mist was curled around Sophie. No mist, or fog, or anything else like it showed up in any of the other frames. They were also able to distinctly hear the whisper of “Louise” on one of the recorders.

Sophie pulled the headphones off, almost giddy with excitement that they had captured the name.

“You see?” she said. “I think we’re very close to finding out the truth about this house.”

“You’re very close,” Martin corrected, reaching over the table as if to squeeze her hand.

She tried not to be too abrupt but grabbed her coffee to keep him from being able to do that. She saw Emilio and Martin exchange a glance and suddenly felt a little bad. But why should she? Even if they were both truly sorry, and even if she thought they were both nice guys that she could maybe admit she was a bit attracted to, that still didn’t change the past. She was determined to remember that and keep that memory firmly in place—a barrier against any rash behaviour.

Once they arrived at the California North Coast Historical Society, they signed in and asked for their favourite historian, Jonathan. He was a younger and more open-minded guy, and more amenable to their oftentimes quirky requests and questions.

“Sophie? Is that you?” Jonathan, a boyishly handsome, tall geek with horn-rimmed glasses, ran over and gave her a big bear hug. “Wow, girl, I haven’t seen you in, like, forever! How have you been?”

“Oh, you know, staying busy I guess.”

She figured that her companions didn’t want to bring up any uncomfortable conversations any more than she did, so she quickly steered the talk to the reason why they were there.

“We’ve been investigating this home outside of Petaluma, the old Vincent Mansion.” She held up an eight by ten glossy photo for him to see. “Can you think of anything tragic or odd off the top of your head that may have happened there?”

“Like I told Emilio before, not specifically. This whole area had a rough beginning, as you know. A lot of corruption, greed, outlaws, displaced Native Americans, battles, you name it. Anything is possible.”

“Right,” sighed Sophie. “I guess it’s to the land records and family archives then. Who wants what?”

They split up the duties, and each went off on their own. Sophie asked Jonathan to guide them where he could. Emilio volunteered to head to the library and look at computer files to see if there were any unusual stories he could find, whilst Sophie and Martin stayed at the Society. It was a daunting task, especially, considering that the home was a hundred and forty years old, and they were only working with a first name and no time frame.
